What is the .VDR file type?
The .vdr extension distinctly relates to the 'VirtualDub AVIFile Signpost' (VDR) file type and file format. VirtualDub (VD) is a popular open-source linear video processing tool by Avery Lee for MS Windows. Being fast, totally configurable and extensible via plugins, VD also provides frameserving capability, by which video data can be directly piped into another application, frame by frame. Several frameserving modes are supported by VD.
In a file-based frameserving mode, VD uses a special pointer, or signpost file (VDR). Such a .vdr file is a very small binary file with a RIFF (Resource Interchange File Format) header and a name of the frameserver, serving as a connection point, or socket for a frameserver waiting for client connections.
With a VD frameserver set up and running, a .vdr file can be opened with any video-capable application as a regular video file. Sometimes, the .vdr extension has to be changed to .avi to avoid confusion. Once a .vdr (.avi) file is opened, the client application will be directly fed the frameserved video stream.
